Iconoclast -- New Aurora -- Quality of Life

New Aurora has one major daily newspaper (The New Aurora Sun) and many local and specialized newspapers. The dome is rich in large shopping centers and cable TV and full Matrix hookups are available in 99% of all residences.

In addition, numerous Public Access Communications Terminals (PACTs) are located throughout the city, allowing residents to stay in touch wherever they may be. The Division of Computing and Infrastructure (DCI) is responsible for maintaining the vast networks and electronic systems that are the backbone of the modern city infrastructure. The department faces this dauntless task with a small army of coders, technicians, and hardware support personnel who see to it that the online services of the city stay that way.

Housing:
Statistics in 2090 showed: apartments, 88%; single-family houses, 8%; condos, 4%.
Of those surveyed, 65% reported living conditions in New Aurora as "Excellent"; 25% reported "Favorable"; 7% reported "Fair" and only 3% reported "Poor." (+/- 25%)

Crime, Cost of Living, and Cost of Housing vary among areas of the city. Figures are not currently available.

Health Care:
New Aurora has 3 doctors and 5-6 hospital beds per 10,000 persons among the many individual health care organizations within the dome. Exact figures outside of the dome are not available.

Education:
The Department of Education (DOED) oversees and provides city youth with elementary and vocational training in concert with the Department of Commerce. Secondary and collegiate level schooling is also provided by the DOED on contract with various corporations and for city corporate employees. The department operates three primary level education centers in the city. Higher level programs are conducted on site except by special arrangement. Enrollment of citizen children in primary school is mandatory at age five unless a waiver for private tutoring is obtained through the department. School sessions are year round. In adition, there are 5 high schools, 27 trade schools and 1 college within the dome which operate independently of the DOED.
