Iconoclast -- New Aurora -- Valsetz
New Valsetz, Oregon is a town shrouded in controversy.
Located about 53 miles due west of Salem and about 20 miles due east of Newport, Oregon, New Valsetz is a community wrapped around Lake Valsetz, along the South Fork of the Siletz River, located about 1100 feet above sea level. It is difficult to access by roads other than that leading to and from New Aurora, since a trip to the next closest town of Falls City requires a 13 mile trip over a mountain with a summit of over 5000 feet.

Valsetz was originally a Boise-Cascade impoundment for timber storage, but the lake was drained in the summer of 1988, with only a few areas of open water remaining. The draining was controversial because of alleged buried drums of chemicals and of concern of downstream sedimentation. Valsetz Lake remained in this condition for 42 years.

In the year 2030, several wealthy corporations who had moved into the nearby boom town of New Aurora decided that they needed a "playground resort" for their workers. A massive amount of money was poured into a project to refill the lake, divert nearby waterways and construct a variety of resorts and chateaus in the area. The town grew, and although it is officially a part of New Aurora, its rich corporate residents have forced it to adopt an identity of its own. The town is very exclusive, and access is nearly impossible without corporate assistance.
